Interesting theory. But South Africa's success flowed from it's incredibly rich natural resources, which were valuable in themselves and attracted an entrepreneurial, adventurous group of colonists.....guys like Rhodes and Oppenheimer whose capitalistic instincts built many industries.
All of which doesn't negate the general theory which explains Europe and Asia quite nicely.

Agreed on South Africa. I've discussed topography and trade before, but nothing like this. It's a very different perspective I found interesting. A new way of looking at some of Africa's problems.
