Following his departure as head coach of the Wallabies, Joe Schmidt has swiftly found a new venture, stepping into a consultancy role with Ulster in the United Rugby Championship. The New Zealander, with a rich history in Irish rugby including stints as head coach for Leinster and Ireland, is set to fortify the coaching development pathways at Ulster.
Schmidt’s appointment is part of a wider trend in European rugby where clubs are embracing the expertise of consultant coaches. This role will see him involved not just locally but also remotely, providing a blend of in-person and digital mentorship and strategic advising over a 12-month period.
His vast experience spans several prestigious coaching positions, including roles with the Blues, Clermont Auvergne, and as an assistant coach to the All Blacks. Notable achievements under his guidance include leading Leinster to consecutive European titles in 2011 and 2012, a Pro12 title, and a Challenge Cup victory. On the international stage, Schmidt has helmed Ireland to three Six Nations titles, including a coveted Grand Slam, and recently managed the Wallabies.
"Ulster has a proud rugby tradition and further developing the coaching pathway in the region is something that we believe can add value. We’ve had initial discussions about where to get started, and I’ve already had the opportunity to work with some of the school coaches, alongside Dan Soper."
Richie Murphy, the head coach of Ulster, expressed his enthusiasm about Schmidt's involvement, emphasizing the valuable experience he brings. Having worked with Schmidt before, Murphy is well aware of the benefits his expertise can bring to the team and its coaching staff.

Rory Best, Ulster's general manager, also commented on the strategic importance of nurturing coaching talent within the club. Last season, Ulster put a spotlight on player development within their performance pathway and now aims to enhance their coaching framework similarly.

Joe’s involvement will help us support coaches at every stage of their journey, from emerging coaches in schools and clubs through to those operating across our pathway programmes. His experience will help create a more connected and consistent coaching environment across the province," stated Best.
