In a pre-game media briefing, Sharks defence coach Joey Mongalo laid down the gauntlet for the upcoming URC face-off with Leinster, looking at it as a prime opportunity for the Sharks to test their mettle against the reigning champions. Coming off a robust 41-24 win against the Ospreys, the Sharks are set to challenge a Leinster squad shaking off a narrow 27-26 loss to the Lions.
Leinster, typically a powerhouse, had opted for a junior-heavy lineup in their recent Johannesburg match, featuring only three players who appeared in the previous season's URC finale. Mongalo anticipates no such concessions this weekend, predicting that Leinster will bring their first-string team to Kings Park.
"This is by no means a Jacques-versus-Joey thing," Mongalo asserted. "He’s one of the godfathers of defence."
Mongalo hailed Leinster's senior coach Jacques Nienaber, recognizing him as a pioneer alongside defence specialists like John McFarland and Omar Mouneimne. He acknowledged his own evolution in the realm of line-speed defence, a complex strategy he credits Nienaber with mastering during his tenure with both Leinster and the Springboks.
"It’s not a Joey-Jacques thing. I think it’s more about two similar systems, because coaching line-speed defence is quite an art. I’m still learning it… Jacques has mastered it with Leinster and the Springboks. Both teams this weekend should be fire against fire."
The Sharks' defensive frailties were exposed last week with the team conceding four tries, which Mongalo described as "soft moments" rather than systematic failures. He emphasized the necessity of a tightened defence, warning that Leinster would likely capitalize on any lapses.
Highlighting the youthful edge of the Sharks' backline, Mongalo suggested their naivete might just work in their favour, propelling them to test their limits against the seasoned Leinster squad.
"The beautiful thing about youth is that they can almost be oblivious or ignorant to what’s coming. They just want to run out there and test themselves against whatever that is," he remarked, hinting at the unpredictability youth brings to the game.
