All Blacks coach Dave Rennie reflected on the victory, which marked his first over South Africa since succeeding Scott Robertson. Despite the seemingly comfortable margin, Rennie emphasized the deceptive nature of the scoreline.
"There was nothing in that game. I know the score might sound convincing, but it was an absolute arm wrestle at 19-16. We were under the pump and the boys barred up. We defended and defended and then we were clinical when we got our opportunities. I am really proud; a massive effort. It’s a great result for us, but we are wary of the response that we’ll get next week."
Rennie went on to praise his team’s tenacity and sharp execution, attributes that turned pressure into points. The All Blacks scored five tries to South Africa’s one, demonstrating a lethal efficiency in critical areas of the pitch.
Indeed, the statistics reveal a stark disparity in the conversion of opportunities. The All Blacks averaged an impressive 3.67 points per entry into South Africa’s 22, starkly contrasting with the Springboks' average of 0.91 points per similar incursion.
Rennie highlighted this point as particularly significant. “They score five and a half points every entry, and tonight I think it was 0.9, whereas we were 3.7. I reckon that’s a big stat: we were able to convert when we got down there, and they weren’t tonight.”
The defensive strategies orchestrated by assistant coach Tana Umaga received special mention from Rennie, who acknowledged the collective defensive effort as key to keeping the Springboks at bay.
"Tana and his defence group have done a great job – a lot of guys working hard for each other. I think the line breaks were pretty similar in the stats tonight and the defenders beaten; we might have been slightly in front, but a couple of times when they could have hurt us, we managed to get people back and create a turnover. Look, you’re doing well to keep South Africa to one try, and it was a big defensive effort."
This test match not only showcased the strategic acumen of the All Blacks but also underscored the ruthlessness required to dominate against high-caliber opponents like the Springboks. It sets a thrilling precedent for the matches to come in this storied rivalry.
As the series progresses, the All Blacks will look to build on this performance, aware that the Springboks will be eager to strike back with ferocity in their next encounter. Both teams now have a week to refine their tactics and prepare for another monumental clash in this epic rugby saga.
