Bath Rugby has unveiled their latest strategy for the development of the new 'Stadium for Bath,' planning to commence construction in 2027. The blueprint received the green light from the Bath and North East Somerset Council last September, aiming to complete an 18,000-seat arena.
While continuing to compete at their historic home at the Rec, Bath will initiate a phased construction over the next three years. Yet, an interesting twist in their plans includes a proposed amendment for an accelerated construction schedule, starting with the East Stand rather than the previously planned West Stand.
The club's expedited approach aims to reduce the construction period to approximately 18 months, targeting completion in time for the 2028/29 season's kickoff. This decision necessitates a longer off-season in 2027, pushing Bath to relocate their last two home fixtures of the 2026/27 season against Harlequins and Saracens to alternative venues.
The need for an alternative venue also extends to the round 13 clash with Newcastle Red Bulls on April 17, 2027, marking the final match at the Rec before its transformation. Discussions about the new venue for these matches are ongoing, with official announcements expected later in the season.
"To facilitate this improved timeline, we will need to create a slightly longer off-season in summer 2027 by taking the last two regular games of the 2026/27 season ‘on the road’ to an alternate ground," said Tarquin McDonald, CEO of Bath Rugby.
McDonald has also been actively engaging with fans through consultations scheduled for the next few months, aiming to gather input and keep the community informed. His open letter to supporters highlighted the importance of retaining home advantage while minimizing the impact on residents and the city’s economy.
The accelerated construction plan, while maintaining the overall stadium design approved by the council last year, represents an exciting but challenging new chapter for Bath Rugby. The club promises minimal disruptions during this period and anticipates updating season ticket holders early in 2027 regarding their seating arrangements in the new stadium and during the construction phase.
