Bulls' Mental Toughness Triumphs in URC Derby
Johan Ackermann, the Bulls' coach, was exceptionally pleased with his team's mental resilience more than the scoreline in their comprehensive dismantling of the Lions in the URC Jukskei derby. The Bulls put on a scoring clinic at Loftus Versfeld, crossing the line nine times for a 57-15 triumph on Saturday.

The Bulls were well aware they faced a formidable challenge against the in-form Lions. Ackermann emphasized the importance of a strong start and a solid set-piece, objectives complicated by the day's intense heat. An elongated half-time break and additional water pauses added logistical pressures, with staff rushing to provide ice towels.

"I'm just proud of the guys," Ackermann said. "The maturity they showed to start well and to stay in the fight, even though we lost a few balls where we had opportunities."

Ackermann extended his praises beyond the players on the field, highlighting it as "a real team effort" that included the unselected players and backroom staff. He also commended the rapid integration of the returning Springboks, noting that the coaching team had provided materials on Monday, held individual meetings on Tuesday, and conducted a full team training on Thursday after a rest day on Wednesday.

"It wasn’t perfect, there were still mistakes," he noted, "but you could see they were buying into what we want to do."

The coach singled out Cameron Hanekom's standout performance, which earned him the Man of the Match honor. "Cameron has shown his strengths, and that stood out in some of the phases today. He hasn’t played with us for a long time, came in and slotted in nicely, and I’m just proud of his effort, and everybody’s effort. Cameron is a quality player," Ackermann remarked.

The substitutes also came in for specific praise, having upped the ante and pressure on the Lions upon their entry. Hanro Liebenberg, the captain, shared his thoughts on the influence of the Springboks, asserting their presence elevates the whole squad. “They set the benchmark and we’ve almost got to follow that,” he said, dismissing any additional pressure on non-Springbok players.

Liebenberg acknowledged some initial nervousness during the first 10 to 15 minutes and admitted the team squandered some opportunities in the first half. However, once they settled, their execution improved significantly. He recognized the Lions as a well-balanced team with a strong set-piece, a challenge the Bulls had prepared for comprehensively.

“We pride ourselves on our physicality, and we did that well,” Liebenberg concluded, underscoring the defensive prowess that the Bulls displayed throughout the match.
