The match kicked off with the Lions quickly gaining the upper hand. Boland was momentarily handicapped when Lunathi Nxele received a yellow card in the sixth minute. Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, the Lions' flyhalf Sam Francis notched the first points with a penalty, followed by tries from Keagan Smith and Jarod Cairns, giving them a 17-0 lead by the 14th minute.
However, the Cavaliers began to claw their way back into the game. Gumede, playing as a loosehead prop, bulldozed his way to score under the posts. The tide continued to turn as Boland exploited a Lions sin-binning, with flanker Gift Dlamini narrowing the gap to just three points by halftime.
The second half saw Boland complete their comeback. Substitute Sibusiso Sangweni put them ahead for the first time in the match, making it 21-17. Despite a disallowed try for Xavier Mitchell, Boland pressed on, securing a bonus point through Jeandré Leonard's try, while Smith added a second try for the Lions.
Gumede's second try stretched Boland's lead, cementing their dominance in the latter stages of the game. The Lions managed a bonus-point try through Rynhardt Jonker, but a late penalty by James Tedder sealed a comeback victory for the Cavaliers, denying the Lions a consolation point.
"We showed true grit out there today, coming back from behind to clinch a crucial win," said Hawies Fourie, head coach of the Cavaliers.
The win catapults the Cavaliers into the top position in the league standings as the race for the semi-finals heats up, with the Lions dropping to the fourth spot. Boland is set to meet the Cheetahs next, while the Lions prepare for a tough encounter against the Sharks XV.
