In a strategic move to elevate Argentina's national rugby team, head coach Felipe Contepomi welcomes former France defence coach Shaun Edwards and ex-Argentina head coach Mario Ledesma to bolster Los Pumas' coaching staff. This tactical enhancement is timed perfectly as the team gears up for the Nations Championship resuming in November, looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup.
Edwards, who carved a successful tenure with France over seven years, played a pivotal role in France's triumphs at the Six Nations championships in 2022, 2025, and 2026. His defensive expertise is expected to fortify Los Pumas' strategic setup. Ledesma returns to the national fold as a forwards coach, a role he previously filled before serving as head coach from 2018 to 2022. His recent experiences include consultancy and coaching roles at the U17 level, bringing a fresh perspective back to the national team.
"Mario and Shaun arrive at Los Pumas with enormous international experience. They know what it means to compete at the highest level and can contribute a lot to the team."
Welcoming the new challenge, Edwards expressed his enthusiasm about his role and the quality he has long admired in Argentine rugby. Ledesma mirrored this sentiment, acknowledging the honor and gratitude he feels returning to a team he deeply respects.
"I’ve always admired the skill and quality of Argentinian players, and I look forward to contributing my international experience to the team over the next year," Edwards said.
"I am honoured and very grateful for the opportunity to work with Los Pumas again," Ledesma added.
The strengthened coaching staff will first be tested in Los Pumas' upcoming matches in the Nations Championship, facing Ireland on November 6 in Dublin, Italy on November 14 in Genoa, and France on November 21, with the venue yet to be confirmed. These matches are crucial as they set the tone for the team's campaign leading up to the World Cup in 2027.
