Ethan Hooker's rapid progression through the ranks of professional rugby tells a tale of agility and resilience. From his humble beginnings at center for the Sharks to stepping onto the field as a wing for the Springboks, Hooker has embraced every unforeseen twist with a steadfast spirit.
Recalling his early days, Hooker shared an insight into his unexpected positional shifts during his school days. "There was actually a very good 12 at my school at the time," he mentioned, regarding his short-lived stint playing as a number 8 before a forced break due to lockdown.
Addressing his current role on the wing, Hooker has grown to relish his responsibilities, "I definitely used to have a preference, but I feel like I’ve found my feet a bit more at wing," he declared.
"Now I actually have no preference, I’m just happy to be on the field."
The journey to international rugby was fraught with personal and physical challenges for Hooker. He underwent a significant recovery process after a severe shoulder dislocation in late 2024 which demanded surgery and a mental fortitude to overcome the hurdles. "I remember the first thing I thought was, how many games am I going to miss," he reflected on the injury.
"The moment you can get over that and just think, OK, let me fix myself, the better it is for you."
Despite these obstacles, Hooker bounced back to join his team significantly earlier than anticipated, a testament to both his resilience and the support from the Sharks' medical staff.
Sadly, this year also marked a major personal loss for Hooker with the passing of his father, Craig. "It’s definitely tough," he conveyed somberly, "It’s hard seeing what’s happening back home and not being there with them." In these tough times, he finds solace in the close bonds formed within the team environment.
Now, as he faces off against the top teams in the world, Hooker sometimes finds the reality of his achievements surreal. "I remember watching these guys play in the World Cup in Japan, and now all of a sudden I’m greeting them in the morning and playing with them in the afternoon," he shared with a chuckle.
It's clear that Ethan Hooker’s journey from an aspiring schoolboy athlete to sporting the Springboks jersey against rugby giants like the All Blacks is nothing short of remarkable. Each high and low on his path has not only tested his physical prowess but also shaped his mental game, making his story one of true sportsmanship and perseverance.
