Robbie Fleck, the former Springbok center turned coach, has thrown his weight behind Manie Libbok as the starting flyhalf for the Springboks' first test against the All Blacks in the famed Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series. On the Boks Unpacked X The Verdict podcast alongside Hanyani Shimange and Jean de Villiers, Fleck delivered his take on the selections expected by coach Rassie Erasmus for the showdown at Ellis Park.
Fleck didn’t hold back on his preferences for other positions either. He concurred with De Villiers that Damian Willemse should secure the fullback spot over Aphelele Fassi, while Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe should feature as wingmen. The pair also backed Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel for the midfield slots, with Grant Williams as their pick for scrumhalf.
"I agree with that backline, and I would go with Manie."
Libbok, who donned the number 10 jersey against England in the Nations Championship’s opener and appeared off the bench against Wales, is contending with Handré Pollard, who had notable performances against Scotland and Argentina. Pollard’s stint included a Man of the Match performance at Loftus and a strategic substitution in Buenos Aires.
Fleck extended his insights, predicting the series outcome up to the final test in Baltimore. He envisioned a scenario where the Springboks would lead 2-1 going into the last match of the series.

Looking ahead to the contests in Cape Town and on the Highveld, Fleck anticipated the All Blacks putting up a strong fight in Cape Town, where they have historically received strong support. However, he felt that the Springboks would have the upper hand in the Highveld, giving them a crucial advantage as the series progresses.
"I do think that the All Blacks have got a chance here in Cape Town. They’ve got the support. They don’t fear Cape Town and they enjoy being here," Fleck remarked, but he confidently added, "I think it’ll be tough for them to beat us up in the Highveld. So, that’s where I see it."
