In a Currie Cup showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Griquas snatched a narrow victory from the Cheetahs in Kimberley, marking the Cheetahs' first defeat of the season. The defending champions secured a 24-21 bonus-point victory on Friday night, propelled by a quartet of tries.
The match kicked off with both teams displaying high energy and aggressive play, but it was the Cheetahs who drew first blood. Simon Miller, the imposing lock, punched in the first try after his team maintained persistent pressure near the Griquas' line.
Not to be outdone, the Griquas mounted a formidable comeback. Within a mere 15 minutes, they flipped the script with three successive tries. Tiaan Lange, the hooker, initiated the scoring spree, followed closely by Carl Els and scrumhalf Bobby Alexander, each finding their way to the try line.
Amidst this rapid scoring, Griquas' flyhalf George Whitehead struggled with conversions, successfully adding the extra points for only one of the trio of first-half tries. This left the score at 17-7 as the teams regrouped at halftime.
"The team showed true grit tonight. We kept our composure under pressure and turned the game around. It's a proud moment for us,"commented Griquas’ coach Pieter Bergh.
The second half saw the Cheetahs clawing back into the game with Marko Janse van Rensburg, who entered as a replacement hooker, scoring from a rolling maul. Cohen Jasper, Cheetahs' winger, nailed the conversion to narrow the gap.
However, the Griquas weren't finished scoring. Tiaan Lange once again proved crucial, capitalizing on another maul to extend their lead. Despite this, the Cheetahs refused to back down, as Prince Nkabinde dazzled with a try from a brilliant solo effort, again converted by Jasper.
The match culminated in a heart-stopping finale. The Cheetahs relentlessly pressed in the last moments, aiming to overturn the narrow three-point deficit. Yet, a mishandled lineout as the clock expired sealed their fate, ensuring a Griquas victory.
"We fought hard and nearly turned it around. It’s tough to accept, but we’ll learn and rebound,"Frans Steyn, the Cheetahs' coach, reflected after the game.
Looking ahead, the Griquas are set to host the Lions next Saturday in Kimberley. Meanwhile, the Cheetahs will be regrouping as they prepare to face the Stormers XXIII in Cape Town.
