The Kobe Steelers have announced former World Cup-winning All Black, Andrew Ellis, as their new head coach. This decision follows Dave Rennie's departure to take over the All Blacks. Ellis is no stranger to Kobe, having spent a significant part of his playing career there. Alongside Ellis, Sir Wayne Smith has been promoted to head of coaching.
"I value hard work, effort, attitude, and the joy of rugby, along with great compassion. I am proud to be a part of the Kobelco Kobe Steelers and understand what is required of a 'steelworker.' I look forward to returning to Kobe and doing my best to help the team grow and build something special. I want to show the players and fans exciting rugby."
Joining Ellis in his coaching endeavors at Kobe will be a dynamic assistant coaching team comprising Kyohei Morita, Hisateru Hirashima, Tom Franklin, Anderson Fraser, and James Semple.
Shifting focus to the Northern Hemisphere, Ulster has made a significant double acquisition. Daniel Hawkshaw, a 24-year-old back from Clontarf, and Martin Moloney, a seasoned back-rower from Exeter Chiefs, are set to join the team. Hawkshaw, previously part of the Connacht academy, brings versatility and a rich background in Irish youth rugby. Moloney returns to Ulster after a stint at Exeter, enhancing the team's depth and competitive edge.
Ulster’s general manager, Rory Best, expressed his enthusiasm about the new signings:
"We are delighted to be welcoming both Daniel and Martin into the senior squad. Both are talented players who have shown their potential and ability at club level."
Meanwhile, the Blues have also been active in the transfer market, securing the services of Nic Shearer from the Highlanders for the 2027 season. Shearer, a 23-year-old back, has already made his mark at both the U19 and U20 levels and is expected to play a pivotal role at his new club.
"I'm really excited to be joining the Blues for 2027. It’s a club with a great history and I can’t wait to get up to Auckland and get stuck in with the squad. This is a huge opportunity for me. The Blues have a clear vision for how they want to play and I want to be part of that going forward."
Blues general manager of rugby, Murray Williams, praised Shearer's capabilities and potential contribution:
"Nic’s shown real growth over the last couple of seasons and we think he’ll add genuine competition and depth at halfback. We’re building depth across our spine for 2027, and Nic ticks a lot of boxes in his game management, kicking game and the way he directs a team around the park."
