Luan Giliomee Shines in Sharks Dramatic Draw
Following a thrilling 22-22 deadlock with the Lions at Woodburn Stadium, Sharks XV coach Mike Vowles had high praise for his team, particularly for the standout fullback Luan Giliomee, who dazzled on Friday night. Giliomee, headed to the Bulls with a new three-year deal, clinched Man of the Match for his impressive 120 running meters off 14 carries and his evasion of seven defenders.
"Luan's a special player. He does things at 20 years old that not many people can do. He really understands the game and he's tough as anything."

The Sharks were down 10-5 at halftime but came back strong in the second half. With key tries from hooker Liam van Wyk and winger Christie Grobbelaar, they reversed their fortunes to lead 17-10.

A late drama unfolded as the Lions' hooker Armand Combrinck and lock Meno Barnard pushed back, with Barnard's late score nearly sealing the win. However, Sharks' defense held on, and an 83rd-minute equalizer by Lions fullback Gilermo Mentoe, followed by a missed conversion from Sam Francis, capped off the intense match.

"Yeah, what a rollercoaster," Vowles remarked. "I think in the first half we probably disappointed ourselves and let ourselves down with some poor discipline, which didn't allow us to really get a foothold in the game. That was really the message at halftime."

Despite a gripping second half, Vowles expressed immense pride in his team's resilience. "Then I think in the second half, the way this team defended and fought for 80-odd minutes, I'm just incredibly proud of the performance," he added. "I said to the coaches now, that's probably the best 80 minutes that we've put together in the Currie Cup. So just incredibly proud of the effort, the fight, and the overall performance from the group."

The draw brought the Sharks three critical log points, though they still trail just behind the sixth-placed Lions in the Currie Cup standings. Looking ahead, the Sharks will face the Bulls XV at Kings Park in their final round next Friday. Despite the Bulls' struggles this season, Vowles is cautious about underestimating any opponent.

"In this Currie Cup there are no easy games, but we’re really looking forward to playing at the Tank," he highlighted. "It’s obviously a real privilege to be able to play there. We’ll probably have a couple of sore bodies, and then we’ll be ready to go and we’ll be up for it."

The Sharks' next game promises to be a decisive encounter as they strive to improve their standing and finish the season strong.
