Mehrtens, who piled up 967 Test points in his illustrious international career, reminisced about his pivotal role in New Zealand’s 1996 tour victory in South Africa. He highlighted that as much as history speaks volumes, the present scenario offers an entirely different beast.
"I can just imagine the Boks will come out with a ferocity that you don’t even see in a World Cup final,” he said. “This will be another step up, even from a World Cup final, in terms of intensity."
The All Blacks have shown flashes of brilliance in their recent matches against United Rugby Championship teams, yet Mehrtens cautions that the speed and ferocity of the South African defense will escalate to new heights — a factor New Zealand must be ready for.
Referring to the first match of the four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, Mehrtens described the opening bout at Ellis Park as a significant and challenging encounter, particularly given New Zealand’s lackluster record at this formidable venue. South Africa has bested New Zealand in 10 out of 16 matches played at this ground.
"Winning this week would genuinely be a bonus. Ellis Park is the ancestral Springbok home. The first Test of a series like this is massive,” Mehrtens noted.
Mehrtens also outlined the strategic advantage the All Blacks might hold in later games: their familiarity with sea-level play as the series progresses to Cape Town Stadium and FNB Stadium, and then a potentially neutral battleground in Baltimore, USA. Yet, he acknowledged that conquering Ellis Park remains a herculean task for any visiting team.
Despite discussing the anticipated physicality and defensive prowess from the hosts, Mehrtens confessed that this clash wouldn’t necessarily result in a tightly contested low-scoring game. According to him, both sides possess the firepower to rack up points, making for an exciting spectacle for rugby fans around the world.
This weekend’s clash is not just about the fierce rivalry or the quest for supremacy but also marks a significant milestone in test rugby history. As narratives build and strategies sharpen, the series promises to deliver some unforgettable moments of rugby excellence.
