Michael Cheika, the seasoned coach with an impressive international portfolio, is set to return to rugby union in 2027. After a brief period coaching in rugby league with the NRL's Sydney Roosters, he has been appointed as head coach of the NSW Waratahs, marking his comeback to the 15-man code since his tenure with Leicester Tigers ended in 2025.
Cheika's affiliation with the Waratahs is deep-rooted. He previously helmed the team from 2013 to 2015, during which he led them to their memorable Super Rugby victory in 2014. His coaching journey is distinguished by significant stints across various top-tier teams and nations, including leading Leinster and Stade Français to major European finals and steering Australia to notable successes at test level.
"The NSW Waratahs have always occupied a special place for me – it's my home state and I feel ready to return as their Head Coach ahead of an important year for the Waratahs and also for Australian Rugby in the lead-up to the home Rugby World Cup."
This transition comes on the heels of Dan McKellar's departure from the Waratahs in June. Cheika's return is seen as a pivotal moment for the team, especially with the looming Rugby World Cup which will bring its own set of challenges and opportunities.
Cheika expressed a heartfelt tribute to his time at the Roosters, crediting the club for their support and stating his commitment to end his league tenure on a high note. His dual-code experience is expected to enrich his coaching perspective, bringing a fresh dynamism to the Waratahs' strategies.
The Waratahs are eager to welcome Cheika back into the fold, with B-J Mather, the team's director of performance, highlighting his proven leadership and the deep passion Cheika holds for the club.
"Michael is a proven leader with an exceptional record across many years building and preparing teams to compete on rugby’s biggest stages. We believe Michael is the right person to now lead the next chapter for the Waratahs and we are delighted to welcome him home."
Cheika's agreement with the Waratahs includes an initial one-year deal with an option for extension, suggesting a cautious optimism about the future. This arrangement allows both Cheika and the club to align their goals and adapt to the evolving rugby landscape post-2027.
As Michael Cheika gears up for another chapter in his illustrious career, the Australian rugby community watches with anticipation. Could his return spark a new era for the Waratahs? Time will tell, but with Cheika's track record, excitement is certainly in the air.
