A failed investment deal involving former Springbok scrumhalf Johan Roux and rugby agent Anthony Johnson has reportedly resulted in substantial financial losses for several rugby players. This disastrous venture was tied to an effort to acquire French rugby club Béziers. Players were reportedly convinced in 2021 to cough up funds purportedly to secure a massive loan of €100 million (R1.9 billion), but the club acquisition fell through, leaving the players out of pocket.
Players were lured with the promise of high returns on their investments. For instance, one former Sharks hooker invested €120,000 (R2.2 million) after being convinced in a Zoom call hosted by Johnson. He was assured a return of €80,000 (R1.5 million) within 30 days, a promise that remains unfulfilled five years on.
"It is a f**king sh*tshow,"
the player expressed his frustration, highlighting the gravity of the financial debacle.
Detailed accounts reveal that the players' money was funneled into a dozen transfers of €10,000 each into a personal account in Poland. The account is linked to Antonino Pane, who claims to be the CEO of Eurokredit Merchant Bank. Roux explained that these funds were meant to serve as collateral to release the larger loan for the club purchase—a plan that evidently never materialized.
Both Roux and Johnson claim to have been caught in the financial crossfire themselves, with Johnson asserting he invested about €100,000 (R1.9 million) into the scheme.
"I'm personally invested in this thing and I'm in the same position as [the Sharks hooker] and the other guys,"
Johnson stated, indicating that like others, he was misled.
Meanwhile, former Bulls coach Rudy Joubert, who was linked to the Béziers takeover attempt, distanced himself from the financial aspects of the deal. He disclosed spending about R500,000 on related travel and legal fees, costs he has not recuperated.
Interestingly, none of the trio—Roux, Johnson, or Joubert—reportedly had any contact with law enforcement about this case, despite the opening of a criminal complaint by at least one player in Poland.
The entire affair casts a shadow over the individuals involved and signifies a significant breach of trust within the rugby community. It serves as a cautionary tale about the risks athletes face when investing in ventures presented by trusted associates. As the legal and personal repercussions unfold, the broader sports community will undoubtedly keep a watchful eye on the outcomes, hoping for justice and reparation for the affected players.
