In a groundbreaking move for rugby in South Africa, the South African Rugby Industry Collective Agreement (SARICA) has been established. This robust two-and-a-half-year contract sets uniform employment conditions for players and clubs alike, bridging the gap between different hemispheric seasons and ensuring the welfare of its participants.
The accord was forged through negotiations between MyPlayers, SA Rugby, and the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation (SAREO), which represents the myriad of unions and franchises. SARICA effectively harmonizes the interests of all stakeholders within the sport.
Under SARICA, players are guaranteed 12 non-contact weeks per contract year, strategically broken down into five weeks of annual leave with three consecutive weeks off, and an additional mix of leave types for flexibility. This setup is crucial given the demanding nature of South Africa's year-round rugby calendar.
The benefits extended to players are comprehensive, covering medical schemes, income protection for disabilities, and head injury management. Furthermore, the agreement introduces a systematic approach to managing player loads, setting caps on player numbers and team salaries, and ensuring substantial off-season protections.

It ensures minimum standards of remuneration and employment for professional players, both men and women and is the default document for any player entering the profession. Eugene Henning, the CEO of MyPlayers, emphasized the importance of load management in the players' training and playing schedules, acknowledging the complexity due to the non-stop nature of the sport in the country.
