The South Africa U18 rugby team opened their U18 International Series campaign with a dominant display against France U18, cruising to a 52-7 victory at Hoërskool Durbanville.
From the outset, the South African youngsters showed their intent. Despite some initial turnovers due to handling errors, they quickly found their stride. Lamla Mgedezi, playing at fullback, was the first to punch a hole in the French defense, scoring a memorable try.
Team captain and No. 8 Jacobus de Villiers, along with right wing Anesu Kuzonyei, piled on the pressure with additional tries. All first-half tries were adeptly converted by flyhalf Ethan van Biljon. France's only response came through a try from hooker Luani Suta converted by Jehlani Trillo, making it 21-7 at halftime.
"Our lads showed real character out there, converting pressure into points and not letting up," said SA U18 coach after the game.
The second half saw South Africa relentless in their attack, refusing to give France any room to breathe. Ncutu Kepe, playing left wing, and loose forward Stefan van der Vyver, further extended the lead. Substitutes Luke Boyle and Thabiso Simelane, along with a second try from Mgedezi, sealed a comprehensive win.
Ethan van Biljon continued his role with pinpoint conversions, and substitute Achmat Behardien also stepped up to the tee successfully. The game ended with an impressive tally of eight tries for the hosts, showcasing the depth and talent of the young South African team.
Next up for the SA U18 squad is a challenging match against Ireland U18, scheduled for Tuesday at Boland Landbou. The team looks forward to maintaining their momentum in what promises to be a compelling encounter.
