Deon Botes, a former South African U18 rugby prop, has been slapped with a substantial four-year suspension from the sport after testing positive for a banned substance. Just last year, while playing for the Bulls during the U18 Craven Week in Middelburg, Botes tested positive for nandrolone metabolites, a type of anabolic androgenic steroid. He was later part of the SA U18 A team in the U18 International Series.
The decision from the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (Saids) mentioned that Botes did not contest the lab results and even asked for his B-sample to be tested, which confirmed the initial findings. At the disciplinary hearing, Botes argued that the substance was unintentionally ingested through a supplement named "Testojoint", which he used for shoulder pain and recovery.
The panel learned that Botes' father had purchased the supplement in cash from an unverified vendor outside a pharmacy. The product was ambiguously labelled as either a vitamin or a joint supplement with "Ultimate Test Booster" indicated on the label, lacking any receipt, manufacturer details, batch number, or expiry date.

The ruling was clear: despite the athlete's and his family's sincere testimonies and attempts to provide an innocent explanation, they failed to convincingly explain how the banned substance entered Botes' system. Consequently, Saids deemed Botes' violation of the anti-doping rules as intentional. His ineligibility period began on August 25, 2025, and will extend to August 24, 2029.
This is not an isolated incident in South African rugby this year. Earlier, Wits University's loose forward Liam Santos received a three-year ban. Moreover, the rugby community is on edge as Kai Pratt, a Junior Boks prop, awaits the results of his B-sample after a positive test for anabolic steroids at the Sanzaar U20 Rugby Championship held in April.
