The brawl, involving players and spectators, occurred during the Noordvaal Cup match between Menlopark and Dr. E.G. Jansen high schools. At the time of the incident, Menlopark was ahead with a significant 36-5 lead.
The fracas kicked off in the second half following a provocative remark by a Menlopark alumnus, directed at the players of Dr. E.G. Jansen, suggesting they "look at the scoreboard." This comment incited a Dr. E.G. Jansen player to vault the barriers into the in-goal area, sparking the melee that ensued.
Tinus Diedericks, the chairperson of the Noordvaal Cup committee, expressed his dismay over the event, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in rugby. “What has happened should not happen at rugby matches and there is no place for it,” he stated, pledging that once detailed reports from the schools are obtained, appropriate measures will be taken.
Japie de Wet, the chairperson of Menlopark high's school governing body, also condemned the violence, confirming that the school would conduct a thorough internal investigation.
“This type of conduct on and around sports fields is naturally something we totally condemn and do not condone in any way,”he remarked.
On the other side, Dr. E.G. Jansen high's governing body chairperson, Riaan van Aswegen, called for patience as the school investigates the "unacceptable incident" to uncover all pertinent details before responding formally.
