Lions flyhalf Chris Smith is gearing up to play his own style against All Blacks ace Richie Mo’unga at Ellis Park this coming Tuesday. The visiting team aims to cap their tour with a victory over all of South Africa's URC clubs, after defeating the Stormers, Sharks, and Vodacom Bulls. The Lions, though still tuning up in the pre-season, are better prepared and almost at full strength for the clash against the world's top-ranked team.
Smith is not just playing another game; he's seizing a rare career chance to face off against a rugby legend.
"Obviously, it’s massive. For me, being on the slightly older side [31], it’s probably a once-in-a-career opportunity. So, ja, really looking forward to it, going up against Richie Mo’unga, who’s an All Blacks legend."
Mo’unga rejoins the All Blacks following an injury call-up, set for his first game on the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour. Smith, however, has resolved to stay true to his own game rather than mimic Mo’unga’s dynamic style.
"It obviously doesn’t help if I go and try to play a Richie Mo’unga game. It’s never been my game,"he explained. "He can do all the magic. I’ll enjoy watching him while I do all of my good things."
The Lions are the last hurdle in the All Blacks' quest to sweep the URC clubs, but Smith feels no pressure. "Call it a free hit-out to play against one of the best teams in the world, which they have been for a very long time," he stated confidently. The results from the upcoming match could affirm the positive trajectory of the Lions.
As the game approaches, both teams are making their final preparations for what promises to be a thrilling encounter at Ellis Park.
