Speaking to reporters, Tuipulotu highlighted the significance of Umaga’s presence in the team.
"You look at the experience he’s had being captain, and the amount of games he’s played, a lot of those have been pretty gnarly, tough games because of the Springboks,"he shared, stressing how Umaga's guidance continues to be pivotal, especially during challenging matches.
Tuipulotu added,
"He’s always been that voice for a lot of us coming up through Super Rugby; to have him here in the All Blacks setup, that hasn’t changed. I know his impact in terms of our defence is strong and his voice in the back [of our heads], it’ll help us get along if we need to, especially in those tough times."
The lock is poised for a tough confrontation against the Stormers, recalling his encounters with the South African side from his Super Rugby days. "I’ve been to South Africa a few times and understand how the club teams play; I’m looking forward to leading this group of men out tomorrow," Tuipulotu stated. The physicality of the Stormers, known for their robust style, particularly in mauls and breakdowns, poses a significant challenge.
Last-minute changes in the All Blacks lineup have seen flanker Anton Segner step in for Wallace Sititi, who is out due to illness, with Peter Lakai shifting to No 8. Despite this, Tuipulotu believes the team remains well-prepared. "We’ve been together for a week-and-a-half … to slot someone like Anton in there, it’s an easy change for us," he expressed.
Discussing Segner’s qualities, Tuipulotu praised the player's versatility and endurance. "He’s good at his core role around the park and in the breakdown, and offers some versatility with his ball carrying and defence," he noted, confident in Segner’s ability to perform for over 80 minutes.
