In terms of raw individual talent and potential, perhaps.

In terms of results on the field of play, I can't recall one standout performance from him this year at any level of the game. We just had a 4 test series against the All Blacks - his name never even came up in the Man of the Series discussions. You'd think the "best player in the world" would at least find himself in the top 5.

That's not to say I don't rate him highly and that he can't rip apart any defense at any given moment and that his physicality isn't probably the best of any 10 in the game. There's just no grounds on which to call him the best player in the world right now. Potentially, yes. But not at present.

I'd say the most deserving of the title of best player in the world right now cemented himself in that position against the All Blacks, as you'd expect a player bearing that title to do in a crunch series: Malcolm Marx.

Last year, perhaps. Not this year so far, at least. He might be getting marked a bit more to close down his time and space. However, that might also be opening up a bit of space out wide. We saw Delande and Jessica in allot of space in test 3 and 4.

He has all the physical attributes currently but maybe tries too hard to make something happen every time he gets the ball. Experience at this level will polish the decision making and game driver part of the game he still lacks. Dismantling a defence through manipulation is just as rewarding if not more so, than a solo highlight run.
