Lions utility back Erich Cronjé has found new inspiration from his time training with the Springboks, setting his sights even higher on donning the prestigious green and gold jersey. After making an impression by scoring in a match against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, Cronjé, alongside teammate Henco van Wyk, was invited to join the Bok camp for a week prior to the third Test at FNB Stadium.
This brush with the national team has intensified Cronjé's aspirations. At 29, he is more driven than ever, aiming for a spot in the Springboks' squad for the upcoming Nations Championship tour in Europe.
"It’s special to get a call-up, to train and learn from the best in the world at the moment," Cronjé expressed to the media. "It was a great experience for me. I’m always eager to learn from the best in my position and from guys who have 140 caps, like Eben Etzebeth."
Cronjé's ability to play multiple positions could give him the edge he needs. Known for his versatility, the Lions back has experience playing both wing and centre, which is highly valued at this level of competition.
"At the Springboks, they call it being a hybrid. It’s always good to be a hybrid," he said. Recalling his earlier career, Cronjé added, "I did play wing when I was with the Southern Kings. It’s always nice to play both and to have experience there. I have a lot of caps at centre and wing."
With the Lions set to begin their United Rugby Championship campaign against defending champions Leinster at Ellis Park this Saturday, Cronjé sees it as another opportunity to showcase his skills.
"I want to be one of the top performers in our team and get a call-up for the end-of-year tour with the Springboks," Cronjé stated. "The reality is that when you get older, the opportunity becomes less, but I always have that belief. That’s why I’m doing this. That’s why all of us are doing this – to get the opportunity to get a call-up and to express yourself."
As the Lions gear up to face a formidable opponent in their first match of the season, the spotlight on players like Cronjé grows brighter, each game a critical chance to stake a claim for that coveted green and gold jersey.
