Pollard's Value to Springboks Underestimated
Former England rugby players Ben Youngs and Anthony Watson recently voiced their strong support for Handré Pollard's valuable contribution to the Springboks, despite his limited game time.

Pollard, aged 32, has had limited opportunities to shine on the field, having started only five out of the Springboks' 18 tests since the beginning of 2025. However, his performance against Scotland last month not only earned him a Man of the Match award but also highlighted his enduring skill set.

Despite the rising stars Manie Libbok, Vusi Moyo, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu also competing for the No 10 jersey this season, Youngs and Watson argue that Pollard's unique abilities should not be overlooked. On the "For The Love Of Rugby" podcast, they emphasized his distinct style and experience, which they believe are crucial for the Springboks' strategic depth.

"You actually have to have Pollard on the bench to come in case it’s not going right 100%,"

Watson praised Pollard's ability to infuse calm and pivot the team's style during critical moments, describing him as a catalyst for mindset shifts within the experienced backline. This ability can be key in tight matches, particularly when the game's pace needs to be altered.

"Handré brings a completely different level of calm and pragmatism that everyone else around still can switch into because that whole backline is so experienced and so used to playing with Handré that it’s easy to switch mindsets."

Contrary to the stereotype of Pollard being just a conservative player, Watson highlighted his capacity for "magic moments" and exceptional playmaking skills. Youngs, who has trained and played alongside Pollard, also chimed in with high praise for Pollard's exceptional passing ability.

Speaking to Pollard’s skills, Youngs expressed admiration for his former teammate’s catch-pass technique, which he regards as unmatched in their shared experiences across different teams and levels.

Youngs lamented the common fate of seasoned players like Pollard who become underrated with time due to familiarity and constant exposure. He stressed the importance of recognizing the continuous contributions and capabilities of veteran players regardless of emerging new talents.

As a critical match against the All Blacks at Ellis Park approaches, the debate on who should start as the Springbok flyhalf continues, with Pollard still a strong contender despite tough competition from the likes of Libbok and Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

Ultimately, the respect and appreciation from teammates and opponents alike underscore Pollard’s undiminished prowess and his essential role in the Springboks' strategy—whether starting on the field or making game-changing plays from the bench.
