The Sharks are gearing up to bring two Springboks back into the fold for the upcoming EPCR Challenge Cup game in France, as revealed by JP Pietersen. The announcement came as the team prepares for an imminent showdown against the Stormers in Cape Town, part of the United Rugby Championship's third round.
Pietersen, ahead of the team's coastal derby, provided an update on the squad's current injuries and recoveries. Ten players, including Bongi Mbonambi and Makazole Mapimpi, were declared unavailable for the next fixture, according to a statement from the Durban-based team.
The specific reasons behind each player's absence were not detailed; however, Pietersen shared insights on when the fans can expect to see some key players back on the pitch. Notably, Mapimpi and Vincent Tshituka are on the road to recovery, with the former dealing with a hamstring issue and the latter under concussion protocols.
"Vincent Tshituka will not be available now. He’s obviously under the concussion protocols, so he won’t be available," Pietersen said. "Hopefully, if I’m thinking right, probably for Munster [on 31 October] or after the November break."
"Makazole is still in rehab. He’ll be back in December, if everything goes well."
Jordan Hendrikse and Jaco Williams have made promising returns to training and are being considered for upcoming matches. Hendrikse has rejoined the team workouts and looks promising for selection soon.
"Jordan Hendrikse is in his first week back training with the team. He’s doing very well and looks on track," Pietersen explained. "Jaco Williams is another guy, the same as Jordan – he also came back this week."
Regarding Bongi Mbonambi, who has missed much of the previous season due to injuries, Pietersen remained tight-lipped about his current status, indicating only that Mbonambi is not ready for selection yet.
No additional comments were provided on Mbonambi's situation, underscoring a cautious approach to his reintroduction to the game. The Sharks continue to navigate their lineup challenges as they eye crucial fixtures ahead, notably their French excursion for the EPCR Challenge Cup.
