So we will only be able to watch two games this weekend as all local teams will be aiming to take pieces out of each other.
This is really random as we will then have to wait until Feb / March with gaps in between of our local teams playing each other. Neither do I like this home and away nonsense. If we were going to do this, why not just throw in the Cheetahs or some other SA team and just call it the curie cup.
This weekend will be the first time that we will see bok loaded URC teams taking shots at each other and it has a taste of the currie cup.
What is the point of October, the boks will be back for the next 4 weeks. Why put them on a plane next week where some will then need to stay on and play 3 games in the URC abroad and then 4 games for the boks in Europe, that is 7 weeks away from home.
SARU really need to figure this out.
I would far rather have a single round of round robin games, throw in the cheetahs and maybe the mini currie cup winner.
Just by having the Cheetahs means it would be 4 games of round robin, no home and away. The team finishing top of the league can claim the official currie cup trophy. But at least it will get us fans engaged as the SA shield didn't really mean much given the Lions won it last year but there was no momentum behind it and it feels like a participating trophy.
We know that the URC is the biggest target. The we have the European cup.
I would just get the teams to play 2 months solid of knocking each other out. That is 4 games at home and 4 games away. Cheetahs get quality rugby and so on.
We can then join the URC and if we want to, take a proper summer break over the 6 nations and allow teams to rest up given it takes 8 weeks for the bloody thing to run with dum games in between.
I never liked this fragmented approach. Stupid play-off games and then having to switch between Shield, URC and European Challenge cup and the currie cup now is a development cup.
If we ran it between September and October, it would mean that top of the log leader. But for some reason we need to have a semi final and a final.
That too me would be far better,
Sep, Oct - SA Shield / Currie cup - matches
Nov - Test Matches
Dec - Euro Cup (North can continue to play over Christmas while our boys get a two week break)
Jan - Euro Cup / URC - Tour North
Feb - URC continu / Make it 6 week tour. - Avoid playing during the summer
Mar - 6 Nations (SA Team break) Go watch cricket
Apr - 6 Nation (SA team Break)
May - URC - Final
June - Euro Cup and Final
I saw former mother hemisphere players saying that they prefer to play local and get it done before shifting to the European cup and then international season
