Zuma used to say that Africa is actually much bigger than it is represented on world maps. I thought he was lying, but it is actually true.

Most of us grew up with the Mercator world map – the one that makes Greenland look almost as big as Africa. Reality check: Africa is about 14× larger than Greenland.

It covers roughly one-fifth of Earth’s land.
You can fit the US, China, India and most of Europe inside it and still have room.

The Mercator projection was designed for 16th‑century sailors, not for showing true size. It stretches everything far from the equator, so high‑latitude countries look huge and equatorial ones (like Africa) look small.

In 2026, the UN backed a move away from Mercator toward equal‑area maps like Equal Earth, which show continents at their real relative sizes. On those maps, Africa finally looks like what it is: the second‑largest continent on the planet.

Interesting. Here are the actual areas for the continents. To me the biggest surprise is how much larger Africa is than South America….almost twice as large:

• Asia: 44.58 million km² (17.22 million mi²)
• Africa: 30.37 million km² (11.73 million mi²)
• North America: 24.71 million km² (9.54 million mi²)
• South America: 17.84 million km² (6.89 million mi²)
• Antarctica: 14.00 million km² (5.41 million mi²)
• Europe: 10.18 million km² (3.93 million mi²)
• Australia / Oceania: 8.52 million km² (3.29 million mi²

H ere is so/mething that you, s h/ou,ld worry about:-

• Area size: European Russia covers roughly 3.97 million square kilometers (about 1.5 million square miles).
• Share of Europe: This area makes up roughly 40% of the European continent's total landmass, depending on where the eastern geographic borders of Europe are drawn.
• Share of Russia: The European portion accounts for roughly 23% to 25% of Russia's total countrywide land area, while the remaining 75% lies in Asia.
• Population: Despite being a smaller fraction of the country's total land, about 80% of Russia's population (around 110 million people) lives in this European

Russia has a total area of approximately 17,098,242 square kilometers (6,601,665 square miles).
Key Facts About Russia's Size
• Rank: It is the largest country in the world by total area.
• Landmass: It covers about 11% of the total land on Earth.
• Comparison: It is nearly twice the size of Canada, the second-largest country.
• Time Zones: It spans 11 different time zones.

@clevermike , why should I be worried about empty land mass. Russia is a useless economy, that can only rely on the sale of natural assets like oil. They have little to no secondary and tertiary services. Without their landmass, Moscow would be nothing.

The Sahara is a third of Africa.

Do any of you guys play maptap?

Dunno what's wrong with the link, just type maptap.gg into your phone or browser. First thing I do every day when I wake. Even before Wordle.
