Scott Barrett, a stalwart of the All Blacks, is poised to make a much-anticipated return to rugby this coming weekend in Taranaki's National Provincial Championship encounter against Hawke’s Bay. Sidelined for the season due to a back injury, Barrett is now ready to take the field at McLean Park in Napier, marking only his second outing for Taranaki in five years since his NPC debut.
Barrett, who will start at lock, is set to team up in the second-row with fellow All Black, Josh Lord. His comeback is not just significant for Taranaki but also marks a personal victory following a challenging year marred by injury setbacks.
Last seen in an All Black jersey in late 2025 against Wales, Barrett's plans for a return were initially delayed by a bulging disc that required surgical intervention. This injury not only forced him out of the Super Rugby Pacific but also from the prestigious All Blacks’ Greatest Rivalry series against the Springboks.
"Depowered my left side so I couldn’t really run and do the things required for my job as a rugby player so yeah, it’s nice to be in a position to pull on the jersey and represent Taranaki again,"
Barrett's leadership was also a focal point of discussion recently. Under the new coaching regime of Dave Rennie, Ardie Savea has been appointed as the new All Blacks captain, a role Barrett previously held. This change came after a period of reflection for Barrett, spurred by the departure of former head coach Scott Robertson.
"I’ve had time to reflect and probably learn from that and ultimately put that behind me. If there’s an opportunity to wear the black jersey again, I’ll certainly give everything I’ve got for that team should that opportunity arise,"
Despite his absence on the field, Barrett remained engaged, expressing his feelings as a spectator during the recent series where New Zealand faced a defeat against South Africa.
“It’s interesting actually as a fan watching on, cheering the brothers on. I guess I probably felt like a lot of Kiwis, a little bit gutted that we lost the series,” he reflected. Nevertheless, he also highlighted the pride in how the team performed despite the setbacks.
