I love the framing of this, Spain invaded... they came over Morocco apparently swimming.
Firstly what happened occurred in the small Spanish territory of Ceuta which is... drum roll please a piece of land attached to the continent of Africa that shares a land border with Morocco. It's on the opposite side of the Mediterranean to Spain which is around 12 miles away.
Yes they swam. A rather small distance to get around the fencing of the land border. None of the 50,000 people involved who do appear to be mostly young Moroccan men cross over into mainland Spain. Some 57 of the migrants appeared to have killed in the incident. The territory has a population of around 85,000. Needless to say it couldn't cope with what was happening.
What happened is not typical of Spanish immigration system. They total number of Irregular migrants to Spain in the first quarter of this year had dropped in half from last year down to 6,218. The number of people involved in this one day incident larger than the total number of immigrants Spain has taken in from all of Africa last year. Ceuta itself had seen 2,826 people cross over the border up to July 15th. Something triggered this event and it appears to have been smuggling gangs mispresenting a Spanish court ruling which said migrants arriving by sea can not be deported without due process, unlike those who cross via a land border. Apparently at first the migrants were told the border was open... then when it wasn't that the court ruling meant they could simply swim to the Spanish territory and they couldn't be deported
As it stands most of the people involved (48,000) have voluntarily returned to Morocco.
But we have of course the right wing types seizing on this be they in the US, Finland, Denmark Italy, Cezch Rep. Italy calling for the suspension of Spain's Schengen membership, despite the fact that Ceuta isn't apart of the Schengen zone and not a single person involved crossed over into mainland Spain. As the Spanish have pointed out, its a bit rich coming from Italy when Italy has had far more people cross over into it's border this year. Hope they give the Italian ambassador a good chewing out over that one. T
While it's true to say that Spain is one of the most immigration friendly countries in Europe it has focused on taking in immigrants from countries with historical connections and who are Spanish speaking in order to improve integration, so it takes in about 60% of its immigrants from Latin America, only about 20% come from Africa and the Middle East, the rest coming from Eastern Europe and richer countries and economically so far it appears to be working at least for Spain in the short term.
And we get this typical crap from the right wing American like 'Europe is captured by destructive forces' (the irony of it being this occurrence happening in African territory captured by Europeans ). How about the US fix the violence in your own cities, end school shootings, fix your broken political system and stop bombing the shit out of the middle east before trying to lecture anyone else about destructive forces.
